GO CRAZY?! DON’T MIND IF THEY DO!
GO CRAZY?!

When the dreaded “crunch” time comes around, employers may ask you to put in the extra effort. In the game industry its pretty normal to lay back and accept it… bear down and push even harder. Why? Because you love games. This holds very true for myself right now, crunch doesn’t bother me TOO much, but I am also newly minted into the game industry… and “young” to boot.   Since the start of crunch, I have notice peoples wits begin to fray, and I believe it effects the  productivity of individuals and the rapports between co workers.   The “new age” of social media makes this problem, of course, way more visible. You can see this displayed in your coworkers/employees via social networking, mood messages on IM services, and email chains talking about what day of crunch you are on titled. “Day 13: Hallucinations are ensuing and I’m fighting a cave troll under my desk to stay awake”

This plunge into crunch can increase overall productivity (velocity) of a project for the short term. This is great for impressing VC and Angels or pushing out a big release/launch.   Although the extra effort may increase productivity by sheer attrition of schedule items, maintaining a pace like that wears on employees moral and work ethic.   But at what cost?  Of course preaching to the choir about the pitfalls of crunch, is like telling a SF Democrat that Global Warming IS real.  Nothing new… What would be more beneficial is to discuss the ways people cope with their stresses.  Here is some stuff that helps myself and others around me.

PLAY GAMES

We play a lot of games at our company, and we enjoy each others time. For myself, the company of others is what helps me the most.   Personally I make sure to play at least one game (non computer) each day.   I have a couple buddies I play foosball with and we play about once a day.  This is great to break up the monotony of the day, and ensure that we are still having fun!   Others break up their day with other PC games like Starcraft 2, or WoW… or even some Kineckt.

LOTS OF SLEEP

Make sure that you get involved with the sleep club.  And the first rule of sleep club… is you don’t tell anyone how early you go to bed!!  Sleep is precious, and it really helps to make sure that you give everyone you work with your 100% best.  Giving your emotional, physical, and mental best is key to being the best employer, employee, and person that you can be.  Its alright to go out and have fun, but burning the candles at both ends after work will catch up to you.  Make sure that you get your beauty Zzz’s!

TAKE THE DAY OFF IF YOU NEED IT

One of the biggest indicators, in my mind, of a good company verses a slave ship (large game companies you know who you are) is the ability to take a day off… AND ITS OKAY! We are all Human beings, and things happen, you should be able to take care of your personal business.   If your company gives you a hard time about taking a day off to go to the doctor, or to install cable into your new apartment… Then you need to look for a new job!  Make sure that you never undervalue your time.  If a company is squeezing every once of your lifeforce out of your fingertips and eyeballs… then you need to move on.

I am lucky, blessed, and privilaged to work for a company that deals with crunch VERY well… and treats us EVEN BETTER!

Employed!

So I have been awful quiet these past couple of months and with good reason… After a long haul and many failed attempts… I have finally landed a job in the game industry.  Currently I am working at LOLapps in San Fransisco (www.lolapps.com).  More specifically I am working on one of the fastest growing Facebook games out…. Ravenwood Fair. We are over 3 million Monthly Active Users. Check out our stats at RWF Appdata

Prioritization

Over the last month, I have gone through a pretty traumatic experience. What I mean by traumatic is that there was a monkey wrench thrown into my plans every step of the way. Those plans were to move out to California and KEEP my cats.

Those proverbial monkey wrenches forced me to re-prioritize my plan, and I believe it an incognito was a lesson in Project Management.

Re-prioritization was only possible because I had a clear vision of what was important, my cats. In order to find the proper path and re-prioritization of tasks I had to negotiate with “management”. What helped me in negotiating with “management” was a clear message, and never giving up hope that I was going to keep those cats.

I am happy that everything worked out!!!

I think I can I think I can! Slow and Steady!

I use this image and this concept to help drive my job search every morning.  Being a recent graduate is not a very easy situation to be in.  Escaping the eternal void that is between, “Not enough experience” and getting that first job nearly requires a Warp-powered Spaceship to escape.    Since warp technology isn’t created yet, we have to resort to old fashion methods.  A slow methodical approach with a dash of patience, passion and discipline is what I am using to attain that first job.

The game industry is not an easy one to get into, especially with all the recent departures and layoffs, there is a lot of experienced talent out there.  There are a five things that I have been doing to get that ideal job.

1.  Put yourself out there every day – Apply for at least one job every day.

2.  Use job boards and resume websites – Get your resume out there on the internet!

3.  Join social networks – LinkedIn is my main squeeze

4.  Contact people you know!  – Friends and Family are sometimes the best leads.

5. Follow up to everything!  – Even if you are not interested in the job, follow up, there could be future positions you would want.

Although I do not have a job yet, I have been getting interviews.  My last interview in Holland fell through and I came back to square one.  I had no job leads open and was back to square one.  That was because I forgot to focus on rule #1 Apply for at least one job each day.  Now that I have saddled back up on the horse, job leads are beginning to heat up.  Soon enough that first job will come.

Microsoft Kinect announced at E3

Two days ago Microsoft announced its new platform for motion sensing technology, Kinect. Microsoft renamed “Project Natal” and many companies showed off game trailers for the technology. This video from LucasArts shows what is possible…

Games using Kinect are going to push the limits of the industry, and change the quality of games that are produces.  This excites me because it opens up new doors for many game series and will allow us to relive IPs like we have never seen them before.  Recently though… I have heard many grumblings (from many places) about this E3 marking “the end” of the gaming industry.  I think that this is true to some extent, but I’m not quite riding that boat down the river yet.  There is lots of glitz and glam at E3, but that is what its about, so I am not too worried.  Also, many of the games that are being produced today and are just entertainment pieces.  Heavy Rain for example.  My belief is that these “games” are more like movies, and do not truly represent a game.

Entertainment pieces like these kinds of games will benefit the most from the Kinect technology because the story driven elements can be relived by the players themselves.  There is potential to grow that side of the industry via Kinect.  I also feel that competitive gaming will not fully embrace this technology, at least not until the precision is there.  Most demos shown using the Kinect technology that I have seen play very clunky and are haunted by elements of the uncanny valley (attempting to simulate real life but not accurately portraying them).

The competitve and even causal game markets will not be dramatically affected by the “sell out” fear that many people think the game industry is beginning to go down.  I think there will always be good games produced, and the sell out market will be exactly what they are.  Sell outs.

World Cup 2010!

Having dual citizenship is a privilege that allows me to root for two teams without being terribly conflicted. Although I was born in the U.S.A. I have always watched Dutch soccer from across the pond. This year, the USA and Netherlands have both qualified for the tournament. The USA has not been great in soccer, but they have improved since the tournament was held in the United States. This is why I have always rooted for the Netherlands as my top team. Honestly I thought that the Dutch had a really good chance to win it last time, and I was terribly disappointed when they lost to Argentina.

Good luck to both my teams and lets hope that it one of you comes out victorious!

Long Absence…

So.. in my long absence I was “owned” by the tweetboard plugin that was on my wordpress. Long story short… there was a bogus PHP file on my website server that was preventing me from accessing my admin panel.

ALSO! I visited Holland for 10 days. Here take a look at some of the pictures

Certified Scrum Master

On Tuesday, 4/20/2010, I completed my Certified Scrum Master training. With the course completed I am now a certified CSM.

What that means is I am officially registered with the Scrum Alliance to administer and protect Scrum values in companies that are utilizing this production methodology.

Currently we are using a format that is very similar to scrum, that it includes a daily meeting (or heartbeat) of the Scrum. The only things that we were lacking in the true Scrum production cycle was the Sprint Planning sessions which occur at the beginning of each sprint.  GP Games uses a modified version of Scrum which is useful for visibility and collaboration of their development teams.

Taking the CSM training course opened up my eyes to some of the common sense practices that are used in Scrum as well as the Full Sail Final Project process.  Scrum was not made for the gaming space but many gaming companies are adopting the methodology.  I look forward to working for a company that utilizes this methodology because it brings many benefits to the daily lives of the project team.
